What is atopic eczema or dermatitis?
Atopic eczema or dermatitis is a chronic itchy skin condition that is very common in children, but can occur at any age. Atopic dermatitis usually occurs in people who have other allergic problems, such as asthma and hay fever.
What causes atopic eczema or dermatitis?
There is no single cause, it is a combination of factors. There are many theories and research on the underlying triggers of the immune system:
- genetic predisposition,
- some vaccines,
- environmental factors,
- weather,
- temperature,
- nonspecific triggers.
Psychological stress can also cause skin rash or worsening of skin condition .
What forms does atopic eczema or dermatitis occur in?
Most people have acute outbreaks with inflamed areas, red thickened skin, sometimes blisters or skin rashes on specific areas of the skin, most often in the folds, or the entire surface of the skin is affected.

How do we treat atopic eczema or dermatitis?
Treatment can last for months or years . Doctors prescribe corticosteroid creams, which are great at first, as they actually mask the spots, cover up and smother the surface problem. However, the problem still exists, in the body. Daily use of corticosteroids leads to the following skin disease – RED SKIN ANCHOR (more about this online and in the fighters group at Facebook page RED SKIN SYNDROME or on our article RED SKIN SYNDROME (RSS) ).
There are plenty of tips online on how to relieve problems without corticosteroids. You are also welcome to the Facebook group Mothers of children with atopic dermatitis . What actually suits whom is a higher science – I did it myself at least 30 versions of balms .
Some helped some, some helped others. In general, I stick to the principle: light, quickly absorbing butters and oils, without lanolin (although I used it at first because I also read a lot about how it is good for dry skin, that it has sebum similar to skin, etc. But regardless, these records are 100 years old and more). Experience with lanolin and heavy oils, which are found in most products for dry skin, containing vaseline, waxes, heavy butters, heavy oils ... just reading this, you can only imagine one thing. Suffocation of the skin!
Skin suffocation
I'm not saying, The feeling on the skin after application is wonderful . No more tightness, no itching... but when it's absorbed, you're back to square one. That's why it's said that such ointments and creams should be applied three times a day. Of course, because that way you can't even tell that they're not helping the skin. Because it's always oily and looks nourished. Unfortunately, this is not the case . All heavier oils and butters (mostly) are comedogenic, which means they clog pores and don't let the skin breathe. Over time, the skin resigns itself to its fate, becoming dull, knowing that "you will be the one to apply it". But I say " LESS IS MORE ".
Although you won't feel tight for a long time after using a light ointment or cream, at least not at first... your skin will thank you later and show you that. I've also read a lot about sufferers trying natural ointments that didn't help them, only chemicals helped. I doubt that. Maybe they just didn't find the right ingredients for themselves. But I don't judge, I understand. All illnesses require complex treatment. Especially on a psychological level - because in the final phase, everything comes from ourselves, all illnesses, no matter how unpleasant it sounds... yes, unfortunately, this is the hardest part. I often hear how a child can have problems with their 'psyche', etc. Not your child, you, you as parents have it. A child is like a sponge. It absorbs everything into itself, your emotions, your energy, your fear, your anger, your poor self-image, your worries... and YOU or your problems can be reflected in it.
Sometimes we are simply pushed into searching, reading, testing, buying, spending, saying that we have already thrown away so much money (this is what I hear most often). “No, you didn’t throw it away, but you devoted that money and that time to the solution, and every single thing was a lesson to you.”
My tips:
- do not use perfumed products , as perfumes are highly allergenic;
- pay attention to parabens, silicones, etc .;
- use as natural as possible, light care that does not suffocate or irritate the skin;
- there are clothes to relieve itching and skin problems and bedding;
- Bandage the most affected areas , as this will prevent the child from scratching and thus creating new wounds, new inflammations - if the skin is inflamed, severely inflamed, see a doctor and, despite being oriented towards natural
- sometimes antibiotics are necessary!
- take a bath (vinegar, salt, clay, with hydrolates), research what suits your child, what suits you;
- also some brands labeled “hypoallergenic,” “sensitive,” or “natural” contain unnecessary additives or chemicals;
- especially be careful of fragrances, dyes and heavy preservatives , such as parabens (butylparaben, propylparaben, methylparaben) and methylisothiazolinone;
- in shower gels and shampoos check that they do not contain SLS (sodium laureth sulfate) or CPPS (cocamidopropyl betaine), which are known ingredients for triggering contact dermatitis.
